CHS Inc. SEO Practice

For this week’s assignment we were to use SEO functions to choose the best keywords that would target our desired demographic. I began by identifying a competitor of CHS Inc., Growmark. I took Growmark’s URL (https://www.growmark.com) and pasted it into THEHOTH, which is a free Google rank checker. From there I identified rankings with high search volume and low traffic, of which I decided on Growmark Fertilizer.

Then I went to AHREFS (a key word generator) and typed in CHS Fertilizer, as that is the name of my company, which brought me to this page. My keyword will be CHS Fertilizer. I like this one because it is broad but very effective.

Next I made my way to Google Trends to see what other words may be popular, especially in our given region. CHS Inc. is a livestock feed supplier as well, so I search ‘livestock feed’ and came up with some interesting results. It is most popularly searched in Nebraska and that is one of the states in our desired region!

Beneath this section was a spot called Related Inquires which gave me a few options but the highest ranked one was “feed for livestock”. I got many results that worked and the top four with an easy keyword is ‘feed for livestock’, which of the following crops are primarily grown to provide feed for livestock?’, and ‘crops grown primarily to provide feed for livestock’.

For the final step in this very intensive dive into SEO, I made my way over to Google Ads. After adding a few keywords that I thought were compatible with both my mission and CHS Inc.’s, it gave me a few results in order to get some easy to rank keyword ideas with high potential of traffic.

I see that it has given me quite a few options. I see lawn fertilizer showing up as humber one but I don’t think that should be the one we choose in this scenario because we are typically trying to bring farmers in for their fields. Therefore I will choose the following:

Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer: monthly searches 10-100, low competition with a top-of-page big suggests the keyword has high potential for ranking and value in the fertilizer market.

From there I head back to the keyword generator AHREFS and type in ‘ammonium nitrate fertilizer’. After searching that I got very good feedback. An easy KD (aka keyword difficulty) means it is easy to rank, meaning with the right optimization of the keyword it would not take much work on the companies side to gain traction in the area. It is also important to note that any of these words would be more than suitable for the job, therefore another five key words would be ‘where does ammonium nitrate fertilizer come from’, ammonium nitrate fertilizer function’, ‘where to buy ammonium nitrate fertilizer’, ‘ammonium nitrate fertilizer properties’, and ‘function of ammonium nitrate fertilizer’. There is obviously a market for it and can be a great opportunity for CHS Inc.!
